Herbicide Resistance

Weed scientists Aaron Hager and Patrick Tranel hold two patents pertaining to a herbicide-resistance trait identified in an Illinois waterhemp population. They have since taken their knowledge of gene mutation and developed a laboratory assay that can identify resistant populations from farmer-submitted plant samples. U of I was one of the first institutions to publish a management guide for waterhemp in 1997.

Recently, Hager, Tranel, and Dean Riechers discovered and characterized the first weed biotype in the world to evolve resistance to HPPD-inhibiting herbicides.
